Creating the Extraordinary Student Experience

AU17 SHI Benefits Plan Welcome Letter

August 15, 2017

Welcome to the 2017-18 SHI Benefits Plan! Autumn standard coverage period start date is August 15, 2017. You can verify your coverage via your Statement of Account in My Buckeye Link -- a Student Health Insurance fee on your account indicates active coverage.

  • Need to fill a prescription in the first few days after you enrolled? It may take up to 5 business days before pharmacy systems can verify your SHI coverage. Options can include working with the pharmacist to partially fill a smaller initial amount and the rest later; asking your prescribing doctor for a short-term sample; or paying in full up front and submitting for reimbursement later.

Visit shi.osu.edu > About the SHI Benefits Plan> 2017-18 Benefit Details to learn about your coverage.

  • Tip #1: The Member Overview Booklet highlights commonly used coverage in an easy-to-read format. Use it for quick reference.
  • Tip #2: Summary Brochures define your policy's coverage and exclusions. Read these documents for full details.
  • Names to know: UnitedHealthcare StudentResources (UHCSR)HealthSmart Benefit Solutions, and HealthSmart RX partner with us to administer all but the adult dental portion of your benefits. We do not have a separate vision carrier. HealthSmart makes sure your claims (bills submitted by providers) are paid correctly.
  • Delta Dental of Ohio is our partner for primary dental coverage for members 19 years and older. They also provide secondary coverage for members under 19 (see Pediatric Dental section below).

Your Member ID card is your proof of insurance. Print one today and have it with you to show providers.

  • For all coverage but adult dental: Go to uhcsr.com/osu Login to My Account > Create Account. Enter your name, date of birth, and Ohio State student ID number. After logging in, click ID Card information > View or Print ID Card.
    • Are you a returning member? You can use your existing account however you do need to print new ID Cards! Using your old card will cause initial nonpayment of otherwise covered services.
    • All members will receive a permanent UHCSR ID card copy in late September via U.S. Mail.
  • For adult dental (ages 19 and older) and secondary pediatric dental: Go to deltadentaloh.comNew User under Toolkits & Resources. Enter your name, date of birth, and Ohio State student ID number.
    • You will not receive a permanent Delta Dental ID card.

Two quick to-dos:

  • Update and verify your "Home/Curr" Address in My Buckeye Link. The address you have in your record as of September 7 will be the address that UHCSR sends your Member ID Card.
  • For all domestic students, new and returning, complete the online HealthSmart form within the next 30 days to ensure claims process correctly. International students do not need to complete the form.
    • In the future, ?HealthSmart may contact you by mail to ask for information. Please reply. Your lack of response can delay or prevent payment for your claims.

Your provider choices can help you save money. Visit shi.osu.edu > Find a Providerto search your tiered options.

  • When you’re seeking care, you’ll save the most at Columbus-campus locations designated as Tier 1 providers (where many services are no cost!):
  • If those aren’t available, try providers designated as Tier 2 (where some services are subject to a deductible and copays and coinsurance apply):
    • OSU Health Plan Network inside Franklin County
    • UnitedHealthcare Options PPO and United Behavioral Health networks outside Franklin County
  • Seeing providers in the higher tiers 3 and 4 will likely result in much higher out-of-pocket costs.
  • For adult dental and secondary pediatric dental, your network locations are Delta Dental PPO/Delta Dental Premier Networks.

More about Pediatric Dental:

  • UHCSR provides primary coverage for members under 19 years of age, and Delta Dental of Ohio provides secondary coverage. Dental providers can seek reimbursement payments from both HealthSmart and Delta Dental, which can in turn reduce your financial responsibility.

  • How it works if you're under 19:

    • You need to make sure you utilize a dental provider who is part of the Delta Dental Premier and PPO Networks, or at Student Health Services and College of Dentistry Student Clinic.

    • At your appointment, show them both your UHCSR and Delta Dental Member ID cards. ?Ask the provider to submit claims first to HealthSmart (via the information on the back of your UHCSR card) and next to Delta Dental.

Your prescription benefit follows a formulary.

  • A formulary is a list of covered medications organized by how they’ll be paid. A link to the formulary is available here
  • To fill a prescription, you can use the Wilce Student Health Center Pharmacy and any retail pharmacy in the HealthSmart RX Network.
  • Specialty medications have a separate formulary and coverage and must be filled by Briova Specialty Pharmacy. Your doctor sends the prescription directly to Briova and then you call 1-800-850-9122 to coordinate shipping. Briova does not have storefront locations.

You can travel with confidence.

  • You have UnitedHealthcare Global coverage for travel and medical assistance, evacuation and repatriation when you are 100+ miles from home. Note: For International Student members,  coverage is not active when you are in your home country.
