Congratulations on your upcoming graduation! 

We are writing to remind you that your current 2021-22 Student Health Benefits Plan coverage will end August 15, 2022. Visit our graduating members’ page or read our FAQs below for important information regarding coverage options. 

 

Q: I am not leaving Ohio State. Can I ignore this email?

  • We contacted you because your academic record indicates an Expected Graduation in summer 2022. However, if you are continuing your studies in a new undergraduate or post graduate degree program during AU22 semester and maintain eligibility by enrolling in eligible credit hours (six (6) for undergraduate; four (4) for graduate and professional; three (3) for post-candidacy students), you can newly select the Student Health Benefits Plan for 2022-2023 via your My Buckeye Link.  Please click here for additional information on eligibility guidelines.  

Q: Can I continue my Student Health Benefits Plan coverage past August 15, 2022, through COBRA or another option?  

  • No.  There are no continuation options available for the Student Health Benefits Plan. (COBRA applies only to employer group health plans.  The Student Health Benefits Plan is not an employer group plan.)

Q: Can I end my coverage before August 15, 2022? 

  • There are no options for early termination.  The SP/SU22 coverage period runs through August 15, 2022.

Q: How do I get a document that shows my coverage has ended?  I am trying to enroll in another plan, and they are asking me to prove involuntary loss of other coverage.  

  • Call HealthSmart at 1-844-206-0374 to request a Certificate of Coverage. The certificate will show the start and end date of your coverage. They will send the certificate to your Ohio State email within 1-2 business days.

Q: What are some options if I need coverage after August 15, 2022?

  • Coverage with an employer. If you are starting a new job that offers health insurance, ask your employer about enrollment opportunities and what you need to do and when.  
  • Coverage under a parent's health insurance if you are under age 26. The loss of your Student Health Benefits Plan coverage is an event that may allow you to obtain coverage per the terms of your parent’s policy. Make sure you comply with deadlines stipulated by the policy and/or employer. 
  • Coverage through a reputable source like the Health Insurance Marketplace at HealthCare.gov or a major insurance carrier that offers individual policies. The loss of your Student Health Benefits Plan coverage is an event that should trigger a special window of time where you can enroll in other plans, including Health Insurance Marketplace plans. Note: Special enrollment windows are often time-sensitive, such as requiring you to enroll within 30 days of your coverage loss. Make sure you comply with deadlines and confirm specific start dates of any new option, so you avoid gaps!
